CELPIP vs IELTS: which test should you take for Canada?
Canada accepts both for immigration and scores them on the same scale. The real differences are how you sit the test, who you speak to, and where else the result is useful.
CELPIP or IELTS: which is better for Canadian immigration?
Neither is better in IRCC’s eyes. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training equally and converts both to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, so the same CLB earns the same points whichever test you took. Choose CELPIP if Canada is your only destination and you prefer a fully computer-based test in one sitting. Choose IELTS if you want a result that universities and other countries also accept, or if you speak better to a person than to a screen.

CELPIP vs IELTS score comparison
The two tests are not converted to each other. Each is converted to CLB, and CLB is the bridge. A CELPIP level is its CLB level, so the table reads straight across.

CELPIP vs IELTS: which is easier?
Nobody can show that one is easier, because IRCC equates them by design. Three differences decide which one is easier for you.
Who you speak to
CELPIP Speaking is eight timed tasks answered into a microphone. IELTS Speaking is an 11 to 14 minute interview with an examiner. Some people freeze in front of a person, others cannot talk to a screen.
The shape of the target
CELPIP asks for the same level in every component. IELTS does not: CLB 9 needs Listening 8.0 but 7.0 in the other three sections, and CLB 8 needs Listening 7.5 against 6.5.
How you write
CELPIP Writing is typed, with a word counter and spell-check, and asks for an email and a survey response. IELTS asks for a letter and an essay in 60 minutes, typed or handwritten depending on the version.
Which test should you take?
Choose CELPIP if
- Canada is the only place you need the result for.
- You would rather speak to a computer than to an examiner.
- You want the whole test finished in one sitting.
- You type faster than you write and want a spell-check in Writing.
Choose IELTS if
- You may also apply to a university or to another country.
- You talk more naturally to a person than to a screen.
- You want the option of a paper test.
- There is no CELPIP test centre within reach.

Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?
There is no official evidence that either test is easier, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) treats them as equivalent by converting both to Canadian Language Benchmark levels. What differs is the format. CELPIP is taken entirely on a computer in one sitting, including the Speaking test, and it gives you a word counter and spell-check in Writing. IELTS Speaking is a conversation with an examiner. Most people score best on the format they find more natural.
Does IRCC prefer CELPIP or IELTS?
Neither. IRCC lists CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core as accepted English tests for Express Entry and gives no preference. Your points come from your CLB level in each ability, not from which test produced it.
What is CELPIP 9 in IELTS?
CELPIP 9 is CLB 9, and CLB 9 in IELTS General Training is Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0. The CELPIP target is the same level in every component, while the IELTS target is a full band higher in Listening than in the other three sections.
What is CELPIP 7 in IELTS?
CELPIP 7 is CLB 7, which is IELTS General Training 6.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. CLB 7 is the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.
Which is cheaper, CELPIP or IELTS?
CELPIP-General costs $299 plus taxes in Canada. IELTS fees are set by each test centre, so compare that with the price at the centre you would actually use. Outside Canada, CELPIP prices vary by country.
Which test gives results faster?
They are close. CELPIP publishes results online within 3 to 4 business days of the test. IELTS says most computer-delivered results are issued within 1 to 2 days, and paper results within 13 days. If you are near a deadline, the paper version of IELTS is the slow option.
Can I use CELPIP for a PGWP?
Yes. IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core as proof of language for the Post-Graduation Work Permit. You need CLB 7 in all four abilities after a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and CLB 5 after a college or other non-university program.
Is CELPIP accepted outside Canada?
Its main use is Canadian immigration and citizenship, and the Australian Department of Home Affairs also accepts CELPIP-General for visa purposes. IELTS is accepted far more widely, by over 13,500 organisations according to IELTS. If you might also apply to a university or to another country, IELTS keeps more doors open. Note that UK visas need the separate IELTS for UKVI test.
Can I take CELPIP outside Canada?
Yes. CELPIP lists test centres in around 40 countries, including India, the Philippines, Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. Coverage is thinner than IELTS, so check that there is a centre you can reach before you plan around it.
