CLB 5 IELTS FAQs
What IELTS score is CLB 5?
CLB 5 is IELTS General Training Listening 5.0, Reading 4.0, Writing 5.0 and Speaking 5.0. A Reading band of 4.0 or 4.5 is CLB 5, and 5.0 moves you up to CLB 6 in that section.
Is CLB 5 enough for a PGWP?
It is if you graduated from a college, polytechnic or other non-university program. IRCC requires CLB 5 in all four abilities for those graduates. If you hold a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree the requirement is CLB 7. The rule applies to PGWP applications submitted on or after 1 November 2024.
Is IELTS 5.0 overall the same as CLB 5?
No. IRCC ignores the overall band and looks at each section. An overall 5.0 built from Listening 4.5, Reading 5.5, Writing 5.0 and Speaking 5.0 is CLB 4 in listening, so it does not meet a CLB 5 requirement. Every section has to clear its own floor.
How many CRS points is CLB 5 worth?
Six points per ability, the same as CLB 4, so 24 points for all four. Moving every ability to CLB 6 lifts that to 36 points without a spouse, and CLB 7 lifts it to 68.
Do I take IELTS Academic or General Training for CLB 5?
General Training. IRCC's CLB tables are for IELTS General Training only, and the Express Entry page states that IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted. CELPIP-General and PTE Core are the other two English tests it accepts.
