The section that decides CLB 7
Writing is usually the section that decides CLB 7. It is the lowest-scoring IELTS section on average, and Writing 6.0 needs a clear position, organised paragraphs and controlled grammar under time pressure. A 5.5 there turns a CLB 7 profile into a CLB 6 one, however strong the other three sections are.

CLB 7 IELTS FAQs
What IELTS score is CLB 7?
CLB 7 is IELTS General Training 6.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. In Listening, a band of 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0 is CLB 7, and 7.5 moves you to CLB 8.
Is IELTS 6.0 overall the same as CLB 7?
No. IRCC does not use the overall band. You need 6.0 in every section. An overall 6.0 made up of Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.0 is CLB 6 in writing, and it fails a CLB 7 requirement.
Is CLB 7 enough for Express Entry?
It is enough to be eligible. CLB 7 in all four abilities is the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and for the Canadian Experience Class in a TEER 0 or 1 job. Being eligible is different from being invited: CLB 7 earns 68 Comprehensive Ranking System points for language without a spouse, against 124 at CLB 9.
Is CLB 7 required for a PGWP?
Yes, if you graduated with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree. IRCC requires CLB 7 in all four abilities for those graduates. College and other non-university graduates need CLB 5. The requirement applies to applications submitted on or after 1 November 2024.
How many CRS points is CLB 7 worth?
Seventeen points per ability without a spouse or partner and sixteen with one, so 68 or 64 points for all four. CLB 7 also unlocks skill transferability points, up to 25 combined with your education and up to 25 combined with foreign work experience.
Can I use IELTS Academic for CLB 7?
Not for Express Entry or the PGWP. IRCC's CLB tables are for IELTS General Training, and it states that IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted for Express Entry. CELPIP-General level 7 and PTE Core scores in the CLB 7 range are the two alternatives.
